Clinical Research Rehabilitation and Translation

Improving clinical care

Our research group focuses on clinical research, rehabilitation and translation into practice. We harness research as a vehicle to improve clinical care and health outcomes for people in the Canberra region and around the world.

Our research spectrum is broad, ranging from hospital care recovery, acute injury or impairments, to living better with chronic illnesses and emerging conditions like long COVID.

We explore innovative solutions for a broad range of health conditions, even robotic technologies and we actively partner with clinicians and community members.

We walk together with First Nations people to assist them in their clinical research priority areas. We will accelerate the implementation of better practices by using effective translation frameworks and building capability with partners in knowledge translation.

Contribute to UC research

Donations can be used to support our research and improve outcomes for patients.

Small donations will contribute to funding research projects and access for participants to projects, and larger donations might fund an honours, Master or PhD student, or launch a project that might otherwise not have been possible.

About us

As a multidisciplinary group, we aim tor improve clinical care and health outcomes, working with clinical partners to identify pressing issues and with community members to set priorities using consumer co-design.

Our people

Our multidisciplinary team of researchers, clinicians and academics come from a wide range of allied health and nursing disciplines.

Learn more about our researchers, clinicians, PhD and masters students.

Our research

We are focused on optimising evidence-based practice, by using effective translation frameworks.

Examples of our work include:

  • Clinical trials
  • Evidence translation projects
  • Implementation projects
  • Capability building with partners in knowledge translation

Connected to community

Community partnership group

Community representatives are invited to join the Community Partnership Group of the Clinical Research Rehabilitation and Translation Research Group at UC.

As a community representative, you might have lived with a health issue, or be family or carer for someone with a recent or ongoing condition. Bring your knowledge of community issues and share your views about research priorities and make it easier for our community to participate in research.

Partnerships

Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit

Trauma and Orthopaedic Research Unit at Canberra Hospital (TORU)

TORU was established by Prof Paul Smith and Dr Danien McMahon in 1999. Jennie Scarvell was the first PhD graduate. Angie Fearon, Catherine Galvin, Ben Serpell, Denika Silva at UC all completed PhD’s collaborating with TORU.

The team includes laboratory scientists, engineers, sports scientists, physiotherapists and surgeons. Research includes several large-scale clinical trials, laboratory and clinical research in orthopaedics and trauma. Most recently, Best Practice in Knee Osteoarthritis, a HCF Foundation, Translation grant funded project addresses elective surgery waiting times in orthopaedics, and Rameikin clinical trial on knee arthroplasty alignment are the major collaborations.

VisionACTion

VisionACTion

VisionACTion is a collaborative venture designed to bring together vision scientists across the ACT including from Canberra Health Services, ANU and UC for the purpose of building research capacity and opportunities for collaboration.

VisionACTion network group includes optometrists, ophthalmologists, research scientists, pharmacists, led by Prof Ted Maddess and Ricardo Natoli at ANU and Regan Ashby and Terry Ho at UC. This team includes optometrists, neuroscientists, clinical researchers and medical researchers.

Long COVID clinic

Long COVID clinic University of Canberra Hospital, CHS

This relatively recent collaboration has already resulted in two category 2 / 3 grants, including from the Private Practice Fund at Canberra Hospital ($60,000) and the Exercise and Sports Science Australia research fund ($50,000).

This pioneering work hinges on multidisciplinary collaboration across medicine, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and exercise physiology, and is likely to lead to new HDR enrolments in this space.

This group is responsible for two Category 1 applications in 2023 (NHMRC Partnership and MRFF targeted funding).

Intensive Care Rehabilitation

Intensive Care Rehabilitation, Canberra Hospital, CHS

Since 2004, this multidisciplinary research group has changed the practice of rehabilitation not just locally, but internationally. With studies spanning early mobilisation and targeted respiratory muscle training, this group is now internationally respected as leaders in this field, with clinical trials and practice guidelines published in journal such as ‘Thorax’ and ‘Critical Care’.

The current project is a multi-centre randomised trial of inspiratory muscle training, with engagement from 15 other hospitals around Australia.
