Culture and Creativity Seminar – Aura Country Terror Refrain

Speaker: Dr. Michael MossmanDate/Time: Thursday 17 October 2024, 12:30-13:30Location: 1A21 (accessed from the foyer joining Building 1 and Mizzuna Café)or Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/93636286167 AbstractAura Country Terror Refrain explores cultural and philosophical concepts in relation to Dr Michael Mossman’s experiences with place and architecture. Framed through the lens of pedagogical approaches, self-reflection and personal storytelling relative to his Home, Dr Mossman presents the key words of the presentation title in relation to influential recent trips to Berlin Germany. The presentation describes considerations of Indigenising the built environment, the vitality of human experience and the historical interactions with place across generations and into the future. Growing up in Gimuy (Cairns), studying architecture in Canberra, practicing and now teaching architecture on the Country of the Gadigal, Mossman invites participants to share their experiences of place and culture relative to their Home. All are welcome!BioMichael Mossman is a Kuku Yalanji man, born and raised in Cairns on Yidinji Country. He now lives and works on Gadigal land and is Associate Dean Indigenous Strategy and Services at the University of Sydney School of Architecture, Design and Planning. Mental Health First Aid - Refresher Course for UC Staff

UC Medical and Counselling is providing training for currently accredited Mental Health First Aiders to stay up to date with mental health first aid knowledge, skills and information. You are eligible for a refresher course if you have been accredited as a Mental Health First Aider within the last three years.PLEASE NOTE: - This course is offered to UC Staff only for a discounted fee of $150, charged to your department's cost centre. Please ensure you have cost centre information, and written management approval, before registering.- You must have completed the Mental Health First Aid training within the past three years to complete the refresher courseMental Health First Aiders will receive a reminder a few months before their accreditation expires to let them know when they are due to complete an MHFA Refresher Course. Accreditation can be renewed by completing a MHFA Refresher Course prior to to the accreditation expiry date, which adds a further three years to an accreditation date.Course participants learn about the latest research in the mental health field, work through complex mental health first aid interactions, and practice their mental health first aid skills across a range of mental health problems and mental health crisis situations.Participants can complete a short assessment at the end of a course to extend your Mental Health First Aid Accreditation. Three years after completing a Refresher Course such as this, Mental Health First Aiders will need to attend a full 12- or 14-hour MHFA course in order to maintain their accreditation.

Speaker: Patrick FlaneryDate\Time: Thursday 24 October2024, 12:30-13:30Location: 1A21 (accessed from the foyer joining Building 1 and Mizzuna Café)or Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/92761071018AbstractThis paper considers a preoccupation with entropic zones across American artist Robert Smithson’s seminal 1970 work of land art, Spiral Jetty, American novelist Thomas Pynchon’s 1973 novel Gravity’s Rainbow, the Russian novelists Arkady and Boris Strugatsky’s 1972 novel Roadside Picnic and its subsequent film adaptation, Andrei Tarkovsky’s 1979 Stalker. In each of these cases, the unspeakable but omnipresent spectre of nuclear holocaust lurks as the summoner of entropy in its most apocalyptic form.All are welcome to this seminar.BioPatrick Flanery is Chair in Creative Writing at the University of Adelaide. Prior to joining the University of Adelaide, he was Professor at the University of Reading, and subsequently Professor and Director of Creative Writing at Queen Mary University of London. He is the author of the novels Night for Day (2019), I Am No One (2016), Fallen Land (2013) and Absolution (2012), which was shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and the Royal Society of Literature’s Ondaatje Prize, among others. In 2019, he published a volume of creative-critical nonfiction, The Ginger Child: On Family, Loss and Adoption. Patrick holds a BFA in Film & TV from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and a DPhil in English Literature from the University of Oxford.The Culture and Creativity Seminar Series is hosted by the Centre for Cultural and Creative Research (CCCR), Faculty of Arts and Design, University of Canberra. Glamour & Giving: UC Psychology Society Fundraising Ball When: 25th October 2024Where: UC HubWhere: from 7pm You are cordially invited to the inaugural Glamour & Giving Fundraising Ball, organized by UC Psychology Society. Step into an evening of sophistication and solidarity as we unite for a charitable cause close to our hearts. A percentage of each ticket sale and all money raised in the raffles will be donated to Terry Campese Foundation (TCF). TCF YOUTH MENTOR PROGRAM was designed for all young people who want to become the best version of themselves. For 20 weeks our mentors work with program participants to develop their mental and physical fitness in the lead up to an incredible final trekking experience. The final trek is what brings the process to life - providing a safe setting to face an obstacle that requires days of ongoing effort, with no option to quit when it gets too hard.
